ENGLISH - On today’s show, the country is opening up slowly as everyone tries to get to grips with new Standard Operating Procedures and new standards of normal. Lawyer Abun Sui tells us that he has opted to keep his legal practice closed even though he could apparently accept clients if he wanted, even while the courts remain closed. Many are confused by the CMCO, extended to 9 June, he says but few have continued practising their social distancing. The schools remain closed but even if they open, Abun says, he would most likely keep his kids at home.

Meanwhile Indai Arun is also concerned that things seem to be returning to old normal far too quickly. While the MCO might have been stressful, especially with the lack of access to ATMs in her area, she is even more concerned that suddenly the bus service seems to be springing back into action with very few social controls.

Then, we speak to Professor Dr Denison Jayasoori who talks us through a growing movement known as “social solidarity economy”. Its focus is on small and micro-economies such as those lived by fishermen, farmers, indigenous peoples and rural/urban poor. Dr Denison says that a post Covid-19 economy in Malaysia should prioritise and sustain these sorts of businesses, rather than regressing back to old ways and providing handouts to GLCs.

We end with Andrew Ambrose, the Borneo Indigenous People’s representative to the UN. He tells us that GPS has had a strong position here in Sarawak thanks to a strong autonomy agenda and just the right kind of support for their elite supporters, while the B40 income group are kept happy with handouts and the rural people by a strong sense of hierarchy. So far, any challenge from Malayan-based parties or from the parti nyamok has found it hard to make a dent. But the covid crisis could be a game-changer, he says, as well as the continuing uncertainty within the Federal line up as one coalition after another crumbles. Whatever the outcome, Sarawak needs a strong opposition to ensure democracy and self-determination for the people.
