Sarawak DUN Done Debating? | Broadcast 11 May 2020

ENGLISH - On today’s show, the DUN sits for a brief moment just to pass the revised budget but with no time for debate. Dr Penguang tells us that the focus is still on food aid, but more on analysing the funding as no more payouts will be made despite the CMCO continuing into June. People will just have to find employment, it seems, so long as they are socially distanced. But at least they are getting some ATMs into the rural areas, as BSN put mobile units in from Pakan, Julau to Ulu Baram and Bario. But the Sarawak Government is still celebrating a new source of income, despite the outcry from various quarters over a ‘dirty deal’ done with Petronas. He says that this is just sales tax for 2019 only and all the rest is simply spin.

But Abdul Aziz Isa of DAP begs to differ. From food aid throughout opposition constituencies, which has been patchy at best, to the ‘missing’ minister of Sarawak affairs, he shares his dismay at the handling of the covid crisis by the current powers that be. It seems Hanifah Taib is taking a leaf out of her brother’s book when it comes to representing her constituency, let alone representing the State in its autonomy negotiations at a time when the Petronas sales tax issue is coming to a head. He says that her no show comes right when she should be pressing a motion for a new configuration in the Dewan for the representation of the Borneo States. But instead, Abang Jo is doing her job for her!

Then we speak to Willie Kajan, previously a tour guide, now thrown back on the world’s oldest profession as a hunter gatherer since his income dried up entirely from February and then his house burned down. With no house, where is the food aid going to come to? In the end, he has seen none.

Then Ik Waddell tells us about their preparations to eventually reopen Bung Jagoi homestay following government SOPs. New packages have to be created to cut the number of potential participants on his waterfall trips to 20 or below. He is promoting online and has had some enquiries, though he is targeting only locals. After all, there are no flights coming in. But with this new threat, we all need to find new ways of doing things.
