States In Revolt Against CMCO; Sarawak Saves Its Own | Broadcast 4 May 2020

ENGLISH - On today’s show, Sarawakians seem united in support of the State Government’s rejection of Muhyiddin’s sudden decision to open, alongside several other states across Malaysia, though the streets of Kuching have been filled with cars nonetheless. But where does this leave the Federal/State relationship with so many states in revolt and so many citizens uncertain.

We speak to YB Dr Micheal Teo who agrees with putting people’s health ahead of profit. We must learn from the mistakes of other countries, he says, even those that have a better health system. But sadly, it seems that almost everywhere has a better system than Sarawak, including other states in Malaysia. With so many sick hospital projects and the government hospitals so poorly equipped, patients are forced to travel far into town centres for everything from chemotherapy to simple check ups. Bad enough at any time, but disastrous under lockdown.

Voon Lee Shan of PBK adds his voice into the mix. Sarawak has its own State security council and is right to exercise its powers. Sarawak must make its own policy to suit its own situation. After all, the Federal Government will not be responsible for all the Sarawakians that fall ill. After decades of underfunding of the medical services in the state, why should we expect them to suddenly step up now? Everyone has their own perspective, he adds. The towkay wants profit, even if he is stuck at home, while the frontliners want the curve flattened. So Sarawak must decide for itself.

Then YB Dr Penguang tells us that Sarawak is not alone in this, alongside 8 other states who have made their own choices on the CMCO. Sarawak sees itself looking at the long-term welfare of the people instead of a short-term economic band aid. In fact, even the Association of Entrepreneurs in the state agrees with the move. So the cabinet are studying all the implications, sitting today for a marathon session. Then and only then will a reasoned response, tailored for Sarawak, be issued.

Lawyer Andrew Kaya also believes it too early to open up the MCO and, luckily, Sarawak has the option to make its own decision thanks to the autonomy of the state civil service.  But he calls for some government departments to continue simple services. Documents still need to be stamped and submitted at LHDN, for example, so that certain functions can continue to be carried out.
